Tridonic Jennersdorf GmbH, a subsidiary of Tridonic GmbH & Co KG, Dornbirn and therefore part of the Zumtobel Group, has signed a licence agreement with Medion AG, Germany covering the use of silicate-based white LEDs.
Medion is a manufacturer of PCs, multimedia equipment, entertainment electronics and communication systems. It uses white LEDs, for example, in smartphone displays and computer monitors.
Tridonic Jennersdorf GmbH, together with Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. of Japan, and Breitungen GmbH and Litec GbR of Germany (the four members of the B.O.S.E. consortium), holds basic patents for a technology for producing white light from blue LEDs and yellow silicate phosphors.
Silicate-based white LED technology enables white LEDs to be manufactured with high precision and enhanced brightness. The preferred applications of this type of LED include smartphones, notebooks, navigation systems and other such display products. This technology is therefore relevant for a sizable proportion of today's LED market. To make this white light LED technology available to the LED industry the B.O.S.E. consortium offers a usage licence, among other things. The B.O.S.E. consortium has already issued usage licences for white light LED technology to more than 35 LED manufacturers throughout the world.
