Three FIT Fashion Design students specializing in intimate apparel have won the 2013 Femmy Awards Student Design Contest. Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president of FIT, announced the top winners from the competition’s six finalists at the annual Femmy Gala held at Cipriani 42nd Street on February 5.
Sponsored by The Underfashion Club, a not-for-profit organization that aids the promotion and growth of the lingerie industry by educating, influencing, and attracting new talent, the competition called for FIT students to create original and innovative intimate apparel designs based on a floral theme.
First place winner Tiffany Spagnuolo from Hawthorne, NY, received a $5,000 scholarship for her “Dark Bloom” design. Second place winner Tessa Saccone from Massapequa Park, NY, won a $4,000 scholarship for “Moonlit Azaleas,” and third place winner Sara Shanahan from Atlanta, GA, won a $3,000 scholarship for “Nocturnal Blossom.”
The three other finalists – Alina Kulik, Judy Yang, and Erin Brennan, who created “Wilting Dream,” “Midnight Petals,” and “Fleur de Reve” respectively – each received $1,000.
The scholarships were underwritten by Penn Asia Company Limited, Stretchline Holdings Ltd., and Regina Miracle International Ltd. More than 700 industry executives, media, and celebrities attended the gala, which was hosted by celebrity spokesperson Carson Kressley. Recognized as a premier event in the intimate apparel industry, the annual gala is the fundraising vehicle that enables The Underfashion Club to support its scholarship, awards, internship, and grants programs.
