Taiwan's Publicly Held LED Makers Scored Total Revenue of NT$9.2 Billion

Taipei,Oct.15,2012--According to market research organization LEDinside,Taiwan's publicly held LED makers scored total revenue of NT$9.2 billion(US$309 million at US$1:NT$30)in September, slipping 2.28%from August, due chiefly to weak market for backlights used in TVs,laptops and monitors.

Revenue generated by the island's listed LED packagers totaled NT$5.3 billion(US$178 million),inching down 0.83%from August while surging 17.9%year on year.Among the packagers is Evelight Electronics Co.,Ltd.,whose September revenue slipped due to decreased sales of LED packages for consumer electronics and lighting. The company is the world's No.1 LED packager.

Nevertheless, there were some exceptions.Lite-On Technology Corp.saw its September revenue rise moderately,to NT$1.19 billion(US$39.6 million),with revenue from lighting LED sales shooting up over nine folds from the same month of last year.Unity Opto Technology Co.,Ltd.s revenue of NT$880 million(US$29 million)for September hit a new monthly high.Behind the strong sales were brisk backlight orders from mainland China's TV and tablet PC makers. In the third quarter,Unity had revenue of NT$2.48 billion(US$82 million),soaring 40.3%sequentially.

Lextar Electronics Corp.saw its revenue for September from backlight and lighting LEDs persistently climbing. Both its shipments of backlight LEDs to mainland China's smarphone makers and contracted LED light tubes to GE Lighting increased steadily in September.

LEDinside pointed out that some manufacturers received more orders than expected in September mostly thanks to vigorous inventory buildups by mainland Chinese TV makers to meet shopping spree during the Oct.1 National Day holidays.

The organization's statistics show that during the weeklong holidays, sales of the mainland's homegrown TV brands, namely TCL,Skyworth,Changhong, and Hisense, rose 17-22%year on year.

The strong TV sales were upheld by Beijing's subsidization program designed to boost energy-saving products in the mainland.LED is among the products.

LEDinside estimated new smartphones for the Christmas shopping season would drive up LED market with the increased number of LEDs in them. Also, lighting could be another growth driver in the second half of this year.

In September,Taiwan's listed LED epi-wafer makers had total revenue of NT$3.9 billion(US$13 million),contracting 4.2%month on month while surging 6.8%year on year.
