South African packaging companies Astrapak and Afripack have announced a new joint venture (JV) in a bid to address the increased demand for food packaging solutions using Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).
The announcement was made at the Propak packaging show in Johannesburg, following a presentation by the Netherlands-based PerfoTec to introduce its technology to the South African market.
The laser-based micro-perforation system technology is said to offer improved product shelf life as well as reduced food waste to the local market.
Occupying a prominent role in the Astrapak-Afripack plan to take advantage of growth opportunities in perishable foods packaging, the system is said to create small breathing holes in plastic film and bags that are used to pack fresh produce.
This is expected to give better in-transit and on-shelf quality and product reliability for perishable foods.
The JV is expected to build the joint leadership of both the companies in the key growth market.
