Flipkart.com, India’s leading ecommerce marketplace, has announced the launch of an exclusive online store for Banarasi sarees, in association with DC handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, as a joint effort with the ministry to offer Indian weavers the platform to reach out to a larger set of audience, Business Standard reported.

In September 2014, Flipkart tied up with the local Varanasi weavers as a part of the ‘Flipkart Karigaar Ke Dwaar’ initiative. Furthering the aim to enable weavers, the exclusive online Banarasi handloom saree store will house a wide range of weaves from the weavers in Varanasi and other parts of the country.

According to reports, the sarees will be priced between Rs.3,999 to Rs.15,999. The store will focus on creating a national platform for the weavers to showcase their unique craftsmanship. Every saree would have the handloom trademark tag attached. Select weaves like Kanchipuram, Chanderi, Pithani, and Bandhej will be added to the store.

Banarasi saris are saris made in Varanasi, a city which is also called Benares or Banaras. The saris are among the finest saris in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk, and opulent embroidery.

Launched in October 2007, Flipkart has become the preferred online marketplace for leading Indian and international brands. Flipkart, currently 20000 people strong, has 26 million registered users clocking over 8 million daily visits. Flipkart’s technology has enabled it to deliver 5 million shipments per month – and this number’s only growing. (GK)
