US-based medical device company Baxano Surgical has announced the issuance of a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) for the direct visualization approach of VEO lateral access and interbody fusion system.
The VEO lateral access and interbody fusion incorporates a radiolucent access retractor and a comprehensive portfolio of discectomy instrumentation and implants.
Baxano Surgical's VEO lateral system reduces the risk of post-operative complications by minimizing iatrogenic trauma to the psoas muscle and the nerve plexus.
Baxano Surgical president and CEO Ken Reali noted the VEO lateral system brings clear and direct visualization to lateral fusion surgery.
"Through a combination of direct psoas visualization and clear lateral fluoroscopic views, we believe VEO allows surgeons to focus on the patient, not the product," Reali added.
Employing similar patient positioning, discectomy and implant placement as other lateral systems on the market, the VEO lateral system is compatible with most intraoperative neuromonitoring systems.
The VEO lateral system has been designed for direct visualization of the psoas muscle and associated nerves throughout dissection of the psoas, due to the two-stage retraction process with shallow docking.
The VEO lateral system was launched in early 2012.
