AN art exhibition with an international flavour has just opened at a South Tyneside museum.
Drawing inspiration from local history, Idiolect is open at Bede’s World in Church Bank, Jarrow, until April 15.
A joint partnership between the museum and the University of Sunderland, the display of glass and ceramics is the work of foreign students from various countries, including Taiwan, South Korea, Ireland and Russia.
In what is now an annual exhibition at Bede’s World, the artists have drawn inspiration from the museum’s collection of ancient glass to create bespoke pieces, highlighting traditional crafts and contemporary art concepts, using glass and ceramics.
This is the fourth year the university has showcased students’ work at the Jarrow museum, which houses one of the country’s largest collections of 7th century coloured glass.
Many of the glass remains were uncovered during excavations at nearby St Paul’s Monastery, stretching back to archaeological digs in the 1960s.
Karen Donnellan, a visiting lecturer at the glass and ceramics department at Sunderland University, said: “Idiolect is a strong group show, which highlights the array of cultural backgrounds and artistic approaches that this group brings together. A common thread within the work is the portrayal of personal narrative through the combined use of new glass technologies and traditional techniques.”
Admission to the Idiolect exhibition is free, and everyone is welcome to go along.
