A 10-Basin Multi-End Reeling Unit Has Been Set up at Baghat-E-Kanipora in Budgam,Srinagar

A 10-basin multi-end reeling unit has been set up at Baghat-e-Kanipora in Budgam, Srinagar, under a scheme sponsored by the Centre with an aim to boost the post-cocoon industry of Jammu and Kashmir.
 
The fourth of its kind unit in the state has been set up with an outlay of Rs. 1.4 million, 90 percent of which was given as subsidy by the Sericulture Development Department (SDD) and the Central Silk Board, Union Ministry of Textiles.
 
Inaugurating the unit, Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir, said the unit has a consumption capacity of 30,000 kg of cocoons, and would create around 30-35 job opportunities for youth of the region.
 
He informed that in order to enhance viability and sustainability of the SDD and the silk industry, the state government has devised a comprehensive program for sustaining pre-cocoon and post-cocoon sectors.
 
The unit would reel out raw silk from dry cocoon that are being procured from open auction market.
 
The Minister said extensive efforts of the SDD initiated with funds from the Central Silk Board have considerably increased cocoon production in the region, which is expected to produce historic 300,000 kg of cocoon this year.
