Metso Is a Global Supplier of Technology and Services to Customers in The Process

MS Europa 2, the new flagship of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, has set off to sea with Metso's marine automation on board. The luxury ship was christened in Hamburg on May 10, 2013, and embarked on its maiden voyage toward Lisbon. The ship has been built by STX Europe in Saint-Nazaire, France.

Metso is a global supplier of technology and services to customers in the process industries, including mining, construction, pulp and paper, power, and oil and gas.

Sustainable Luxury

Besides luxury, the ship also features sustainability. It is the first new build in the world to have a catalytic converter, reducing nitric oxide emissions by 95%. Other green highlights include an advanced wastewater treatment plant, desalination plant, LED lighting, and comprehensive waste separation and disposal facilities aboard.

The Metso DNA automation system integrates the management of the electric power plant, monitoring and various controls in the fire, bilge, ballast, ballast water treatment, fuel oil filling and transfer, sea and fresh water cooling, swimming pools, engine room ventilation, propulsion, incinerator, boiler, fresh water production, and black and gray water systems.

Through the user-friendly human-machine-interface of the Metso DNA, operators have a full monitoring overview and access to the control functions of the integrated systems. They also have at hand an Information Management System that includes supporting documents and versatile trending, replay, and analyzing tools.

Cooperation a Key to Success

Metso's project manager Harald Eriksen emphasizes good cooperation with the shipyard and its team as one of the important contributions to the successful delivery.

"A significant time saver for the onboard testing and commissioning has been the modeling and thorough pre-testing by a simulator prior to onboard installation. Metso DNA is a system that makes it easy and fast to carry out changes, which is very important in the final tuning of functions," he says.

MS Europa 2 has 7 passenger decks and 251 suites accommodating 516 passengers. The space per passenger is the largest one compared with any other cruise ship in the world. The number of crew members exceeds 370. The ship's length is 225.38 m, the total installed power is 24.0 mW, and the propulsion power is 14.5 mW, providing a maximum speed of 22 knots.

The Automation segment's process automation and flow control solutions meet the growing needs of Metso's customer industries to improve production process efficiency as raw materials and energy sources become scarcer and their costs increase. A global network of service experts delivers business solutions to customers that improve their productivity, lower risks, and optimize costs.
