Microsoft is going for the XL moniker to better highlight the large screen available on its phones.
The Lumia 640 XL comes with a 5.7-inch HD IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, Gorilla Glass 3 coating, and Glance screen support, as well as with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8226) and a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor.
The device features 8 GB of internal storage but can be expanded to a maximum of 128 GB thanks to microSD card support. 1 GB of RAM makes the device decently fast and should also be enough to run Windows 10 for phones reasonably well.
Cameras and battery
In terms of cameras, the Lumia 640 XL comes with a rear 13-megapixel unit with autofocus, a Flash LED, and support for 1080p video at 30 fps. The front camera is a 5-megapixel unit with wide angle for selfies and video calls and also capable of shooting video at 1080p.
As far as connectivity options are concerned, the first XL Lumia comes with all the common features, including Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB2.0, Micro SIM, A-GPS+GLONASS, BeiDou, DLNA, Screen cloning with Miracast, and WLAN 802.11 b/g/n.
The Lumia 640 XL will ship with a 3000 mAh removable battery which, given the aforementioned technical specs, should be enough to offer around 1 to 2 days of autonomy per charge.
It measures 157.9 x 81.5 x 9.0 mm and weighs in only 171 grams.
Pricing and versions
The Lumia 640 XL will go on sale next month, with pricing to begin at €189 ($215) for the 3G version and €219 ($245) for the LTE flavor. There will be several color options, including matte cyan, orange and black, matte and glossy white.
In addition, the device will come with a 1-year subscription for Office 365, which also includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype calls to mobiles and landlines across the world.
