The Opel Corsa, Subaru Outback and Volvo V40 have been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) in the latest round of crash testing.
ANCAP CEO Nicholas Clarke said the standout performer was the Volvo V40 (above and below), which scored 36.67 points out of 37.
The V40, which launches in Australia in March, is equipped with a host of advanced safety systems including a pedestrian-detecting autonomous braking system and a world-first under-bonnet airbag.
As a result, the compact Volvo becomes the first vehicle to earn top points in offering maximum protection for pedestrians’ heads, and is one of the few vehicles to earn the highest ‘good’ rating for overall pedestrian protection.
The Subaru Forester (above) also impressed, scoring 35.64 points out of 37 to become the top-rated vehicle in ANCAP’s compact SUV segment.
All new Forester models are fitted with seven airbags (dual front, side, curtain and driver’s knee), while high-grade variants score Subaru’s EyeSight system, which incorporates pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, among other features.
The Opel Corsa (above) joins its larger Astra and Insignia siblings in offering five-star safety. The recently released city car scored 33.72 points out of 37, and is equipped as standard with six airbags and electronic stability control.
