Graphic Packaging to Invest $136m to Upgrade Macon Mill in Georgia

Graphic Packaging International (GPI) is set to invest $136m to modernize its Macon mill in Macon-Bibb County, Georgia.

The statement was made by Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) and the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority (MBCIA).

The investment will help create over 460 manufacturing jobs in the region, while GPI already employs more than 1,330 employees in Georgia.

Macon mill is involved in the production of paperboard, which can be used in food and beverage packaging applications.

GPI will use the investment to install an advanced curtain coater and automate certain processes, in addition to upgrading the water, generator and air systems to enhance the mill’s environmental profile.

GDEcD commissioner Pat Wilson said: “Georgia has a rich history in manufacturing, and many strategic assets that enable companies in this industry sector to find success here and abroad.

“GPI’s decision to modernize its operations is a testament to our state’s position as a global leader in the industry, and we are excited to see the company flourish in Macon.”

GPI president and CEO Michael Doss said: “A number of factors influenced our decision, including the facility location; access to a diverse, educated and skilled local workforce; and our relationship with Macon – Bibb County and the State of Georgia.”

Based in Atlanta of Georgia, GPI offers paper-based packaging solutions for food, beverage and other consumer products.

In November, Graphic Packaging agreed to acquire Canada-based Seydaco Packaging and its affiliates for an undisclosed sum.

Under the deal, the company’s wholly-owned subsidiaries Graphic Packaging International and Graphic Packaging International Canada will acquire the assets of Seydaco Packaging and its affiliates National Carton and Coating and Groupe Ecco Boites Pliantes Ltée.
