Broken Light in Rotterdam,Netherlands by Daglicht&Vorm was honored with the IALD Radiance Award of Excellence,the highest point score winner across all categories of the 15 architectural lighting design projects recognized.
Broken Light was developed in response to a design competition for Rotterdam's Katendrecht neighborhood.Broken Light partly took over the public lighting and transformed the look&feel of the area.
The custom luminaires facilitate the vertical and horizontal projections from one lamp at a height of 6 meters with an added standard road light armature.
Pedestrians experience pools of light and dark from the glare-free street lighting.The light motifs are inspired by flowers and birds and are conveyed by the light system as high-yield light effects and patterns.The designers used the system to vary the size,pattern and intensity of projections to customize space between windows.
Broken Light has rejuvenated a street that until a few years ago was rife with crime.It exists as a social sculpture for the streets residents,who literally and figuratively have welcome a little light into the neighborhood.
About Rosemarie Allaire Born in the Motor City and home of Motown,Detroit,Michigan,Rosemarie L.Allaire,IALD,MIES studied Interior Design and Dance at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and is celebrating her 25th year as an independent Architectural lighting designer.Ms.Allaire has worked for lighting firms in Michigan,Connecticut,New York and California.She is Principal of Rosemarie Allaire Lighting Design(R A L D)in Dana Point,CA and focuses on Residential and Hospitality Lighting Applications.
