Westshore Terminals Reported an Average Coal Loading Rate of C$9.52 in Q3

Westshore Terminals reported an average coal loading rate of C$9.52 in the third quarter, up 2% from both the previous quarter and the year-ago quarter, according to its quarterly report filed late Wednesday with the Canadian government.

The terminal, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, said third quarter coal loading revenues totaled C$78.4 million, up 2% from the second quarter and up 17.7% from the third quarter of 2012.

The terminal handled 8.2 million mt in the quarter, of which 62% was metallurgical coal and 37% was thermal coal.

In the previous quarter, the terminal also handled 8.2 million mt, of which 60% was met coal and 40% was thermal coal, while in the year-ago quarter, the terminal handled 7.1 million mt, of which 58% was met coal and 41% was thermal coal.

Based on anticipated shipments and the current run rate, the terminal's management believes Westshore will export roughly 30 million mt in 2013, up from 26.1 million mt exported in 2012.

The terminal reported third quarter income of C$29.5 million, up 5.6% from the year-ago period.

Westshore has an annual capacity of roughly 33 million mt, and is the largest coal export terminal in North America. Roughly 80% of its capacity is tied to fixed rate contracts that run through 2021, according to the terminal.

Coal producers who use the terminal, which is served by BNSF Railway, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, include Teck Resources, Cloud Peak Energy and Signal Peak Energy.
