The Mazda 6 Celebrity Challenge racers are being prepped and readied for their ensuing battle as part of this weekend’s 2013 Formula One Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The 21 Mazda 6 Celebrity Challenge celebrities, including a former Australian cricketer, two Olympians, a Paralympian, a celebrity chef, entertainers and TV personalities, a fashion designer and a swimsuit model, are being shown the ins and outs of racing through an intensive three-day driver training program run by Australian motorsport legend Mark Skaife at Sandown Racecourse this week, ahead of the weekend’s main competition.
With all the celebrities behind the wheel of the new 129kW/420Nm Mazda 6 diesel, the race also marks the first time that a field of oil-burners have taken to the grid for a celebrity race.
While the Mazda 6 diesel’s combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.5 litres per 100km (manual transmission) is helpful over long distances, the celebrities will more likely be focusing on the front-wheel-drive sedan’s 7.8 second 0-100km/h acceleration time and 223km/h top speed.
The Mazda 6 Celebrity Challenge, and the main event, will take place around the Albert Park street circuit from March 14 – 17.
