Owners of British Gas - Centrica - has struck a £10 billion supply deal with the US that the firm states could play an important role in ensuring the UK's energy security.
The firm stated that the 20-year deal with Cheniere Energy Partners would enable it to heat as many as 1.8 million British homes.
It is estimated that the first shipments will not come from the Louisiana-based plant until 2018, so people are set to continue to struggle to pay their energy bills during colder than expected winters.
Indeed, a faulty pump at the Interconnector, one of Britain's main gas pipelines, caused an eight-hour shutdown last Friday (March 22nd). As a result of the closure, there was a 50 per cent spike in gas prices and analysts have warned that higher bills for consumers could be on the way.
All of the big six energy suppliers in the UK have increased their prices in the last few months and it has been claimed that these could be set to rise even further in the near future.
As a result people should be looking for different ways to cut the amount of energy that they use in the home. There are many ways to do this such as installing energy-efficient LED light bulbs.
These use much less energy than traditional incandescent and as such will reduce the amount of money you are spending on bills.
Despite the deal not taking place until 2018, energy minister John Hayes denied that there is a supply crisis in the UK.
Centrica's chief executive officer Sam Laidlaw commented on the historic deal: "This landmark agreement represents a significant step forward in our strategy, enabling Centrica to strengthen its position along the gas value chain and helping to ensure the UK's future energy security."
