The Hennessey Venom GT is the world’s fastest production car available for public purchase, after registering a top speed over 427km/h.
The US-built Lotus Elise/Exige-based Hennessey Venom GT, powered by a twin-turbocharged General Motors-sourced 7.0-litre V8, ticked over 427.6km/h (265.7mph) down a two-mile (3.22km) runway at the Lemoore Naval Air Station in California to set the new record.
Weighing 1244kg and with a powerplant that develops 928kW of power at 6600rpm and 1564Nm of torque at 4400rpm, the Hennessey Venom GT hits 100km/h in 2.7 seconds, holds the Guinness World Record for its 0-300km/h time of 13.63 and will cover the quarter mile in 9.92 seconds.
While Hennessey president and founder John Hennessey does admit that the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport has achieved a top speed of 430.98km/h, he points out that Bugatti speed-limit its production vehicles to 415km/h.
“Thus, at 265.7mph the Venom GT is the fastest production car available to the public,” said John Hennessey.
