Two new reports from iData Research cover the US market for vascular access devices and the European markets for cardiac surgery and heart valve devices.
The European interventional cardiology report covers markets for tissue heart valves, mechanical heart valves, annuloplasty repair, transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR), transcatheter heart valve implantation (THVI), ONCAB, OPCAB, endoscopic vessel harvesting (EVH), anastomosis assist device (AAD), cardiac ablation, transmyocardial revascularization (TMR), ventricular assist devices (VAD), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs), artificial hearts, patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect devices.
The new European report predicts that the total European cardiac surgery devices segment will grow by more than 10 percent, to over $3.4 billion a year, by 2020. The fastest growing market is transcatheter heart valve devices, which are comprised of both the THVI and the TMVR segments. The THVI market alone is expected to surpass $1.7 billion. The report notes that, although currently the only THVI products available on the market are transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) devices, transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) devices are being developed and are expected to receive CE approval by 2020.
According to the report, Edwards Lifesciences, who recently introduced their new product Sapien 3, is the current TAVI market leader. Boston Scientific, which recently received CE market certification for its Lotus Valve System, is in hot pursuit. Other major players in this segment include Medtronic, JenaValve, St Jude Medical, Sorin and Direct Flow Medical.
The report on the US vascular access device market includes implantable ports, port or Huber needles, central venous catheters (CVCs), dialysis catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs). The market also includes hand-carried and portable ultrasound systems, ultrasound guidance systems used for vascular access, catheter securement devices, and syringes and needles.
Market leaders in the US vascular access market include Becton Dickinson, C.R. Bard and Covidien. This segment was valued at $3.7 billion in 2013 and, according to the report, is expected to grow to over $5 billion by 2020. This growth is fueled by government safety and reimbursement policies designed to reduce infection and injury rates.
