Global LED backlighting production value will drop about 10% in 2015 as production value for TV and tablet applications continue to fall, according to Taiwan-based LED makers.
Smartphone applications will account for more than 30% of total LED backlighting production value in 2015, while TVs will take up about 30%, the sources said.
Ultra HD TVs require 50% higher brightness and therefore 40-50% more LED chips for backlighting, but direct-type TV backlighting based on flip-chip LEDs uses fewer chips by at least 30%, the sources indicated.
As the 5-inch range is expected to become the mainstream smartphone screen-size segment and LED chips used in smartphone backlighting have luminous intensity of 2,500-2,700mcd, production value for smartphone backlighting applications in 2015 is expected to grow on year by 15-20%, the sources said.
