The government's new Green Deal, which gives people the opportunity to make energy-saving home improvements with these then paid on their bills, has been launched today (January 28th).
This is the coalition's new initiative aimed at transforming people's homes, to ensure they get the best out of their energy.
With buildings in Britain among the least efficient in the world, it is hoped that the Green Deal will give both homeowners and businesses a new way of paying for improvements such as insulation.
There are 45 different types of improvements that are currently available under the Green Deal, which helps to warm people's homes. It allows homeowners to pay for some or all of the improvements over time on their electricity bills.
Of course, another way of improving the energy efficiency of your home is by installing ceiling spotlights that use up much less electricity.
While they are more expensive to purchase, people will find that LED light bulbs will more than pay back the capital spent on them in the long run.
It was announced last week that a total of £46 million is set to be allocated into three areas for investment which are: £31 million for helping vulnerable householders stay warm this winter, £10 million to start the Green Deal and a further £5 million on the setting up of collective switching schemes.
Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg said the Green Deal will help thousands of homes stay warm in the harsh winter for much less money than has been the case previously.
Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker commented: "The Green Deal will transform the energy efficiency market and puts consumers in charge. It's a fantastic new scheme that will allow people to make their homes warmer and save energy at the same time. And it's not just consumers who will benefit. The Green Deal is also great for business, creating a new market and new jobs."
