Meat firm Cranswick has fought off still competition to win a pound 30M contract to become Asda’s main fresh pork supplier.
An Asda spokeswoman told FoodManufacture.co.uk: “We have moved the majority of our pork business into Cranswick which will operate from a facility in Hull.”
Cranswick is to open a new packing plant in Hull – which will create about 100 jobs to meet demand from the retailer.
Cranswick secured the deal after Dutch multi-national meat firm Vion decided to sell its UK food businesses.
Impressive growth
Meanwhile, the meat firm delivered “impressive growth” in the three months to December 31 – despite soaring pig prices according to City analysts.
The firm posted 7% underlying sales growth in the three months to 31 December. That was driven by volume growth, which Panmure Gordon estimated was about 6%.
Taking into account the acquisition of Kingston Foods, sales growth was 8% and volume growth about 7%.
