A suspected chlorine dioxide leak at Nucor-Yamato's Blytheville, Arkansas mill sent 18 people to the hospital Sunday morning. Blytheville Fire Chief Mike Carney told reporters that the fire department's hazardous materials team decontaminated the workers and contractors who were exposed to the gas before sending them to a hospital. Most of the workers were released later that day, while a few were admitted to the hospital for further observation.
The cause of the leak remains under investigation, and Nucor has not indicated how production at the mill will be impacted.
