Apple Launches Single Sign-on Tool for TV Apps

Apple aims to make it easier for you to use the video apps included in your cable or satellite TV subscription.

The company on Tuesday launched a new single authentication tool that allows iOS and Apple TV users to enter their account credentials just once to have instant access to the apps from their programming provider. Previously, cable-specific apps such as HBO Go and Time Warner Cable asked users to enter their cable provider when they used an app for the first time.

The new feature, which is currently available only in the US, can be used on CenturyLink Prism, DirecTV, Dish, GVTC, GTA, Hawaiian Telecom, Hotwire, MetroCast and Sling, according to an Apple support document.

Apple revealed the single sign-on feature in June and made it available in November to those with access to the tvOS 10.1 and 10.2 betas. It wasn't immediately clear when the feature might be available internationally.
