According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian motor vehicle production in January this year increased eight percent as compared to January 2012 and was up 8.4 percent month on month with 1,850,848 vehicles produced. In the first 10 months of the current Indian fiscal year (started April 1, 2012), India's passenger car output rose 2.76 percent over the same period last year.
In the April 2012-January 2013 period, motor vehicle sales in India increased by 4.66 percent year on year, the country's passenger car sales in the period in question decreased by 1.8 percent, while other light vehicle (utility vehicles) sales rose by 56.87 percent and the commercial vehicles segment registered a fall of 0.4 percent, all on year-on-year basis. However, in January India's total motor vehicle sales decreased by 4.6 percent compared to January 2012, while passenger car sales fell by 12.45 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, in the first 10 months of the current Indian fiscal year India's total motor vehicle exports decreased by three percent year on year. Passenger car exports rose by 7.8 percent and commercial vehicle exports registered a decrease of 10.5 percent in the 10 months in question, both on year-on-year basis. The SIAM said that in January this year passenger car exports from India fell by 13.5 percent, while commercial vehicle exports fell by 46.9 percent, both year on year.
