Green packaging maker Cascades is to invest in the expansion of two of its packaging plants in Quebec, Canada.
The company plans to invest around $4.5m in its Plastiques Cascades plant in Kingsey Falls and its Cascades Inopak plant in Drummondville.
Both the plants, part of the Cascades specialty products business, manufacture packaging from recycled plastic for fresh food.
Of the proposed investment, around $3.5m will be used to add a pre-padding solution to the production line and install automated packaging lines by replacing a thermoforming line at the Plastiques Cascades plant.
The remainder $1m will be spent on installing a new thermoforming line at the Cascades Inopak plant.
Cascades president and CEO Mario Plourde said: "The investments announced today are directly in line with our strategic plan to focus our investments on two major sectors: packaging and tissue products.
"The goal is to increase the company's market share in the food packaging sector, by continuing to propose innovative products that ensure an optimal shelf life for food and reduce our environmental footprint."
The expansion is expected to ramp up production capacity at both the plants, while reducing the physical strain associated with certain packaging activities.
The Kingsey Falls plant produces polystyrene food trays with 25% recycled content that are used in the packaging of fresh food products such as meat, poultry and seafood.
Cascades Inopak manufactures food packaging products and consumer goods made from polyethylene terephthalate with a minimum of 60% post-consumer recycled content.
The company recently installed a new converting line at its Candiac plant in Quebec, Canada.
