Lighting control specialist Open Technology is to supply its LiGO control system to Clapham Junction – the busiest railway station in the country.
The system will enable train operator South West Trains, to adjust lighting levels at the station, depending on passenger numbers, time of day and train timetables, and could also achieve significant energy savings for the train company.
Commenting on the project, Open Technology managing director Chris Bedford said: "Delivery of a safe environment is of paramount importance in the transport sector. Our LiGO system gives the confidence that appropriate light levels are maintained at all times, while ensuring they are no higher than necessary.
"We are able to achieve maximum savings for the operators, alongside comfort and safety for staff and passengers."?
The LiGo control system will automatically dim lights, or switch them off when the station is closed – and this could result in savings of up to 35 percent.
This new project brings to 25 the number of stations and train maintenance depots on the Southwest Trains Wessex route using the LiGO product, says Open Technology.
Amy Dickinson, environment manager at Southwest Trains, Network Rail Alliance, said: "Reducing our energy consumption is a challenging but crucial aspect of our business. Intelligent lighting has enabled us to save, on average, 20% at each location."
She added: "An automatic control keeps it simple for us. It enables us to save as much energy as possible, by dimming down and turning off automatically when not in use. It also tracks usage, which helps us to spot any areas for improvement and understand how our buildings are being used."
