Japan-based Nichia has finished development of E-LEDS, flip-chip LED chips made using internally-developed special materials, and will launch it in October 2015, with the product to be initially used in high-end outdoor lighting and LCD TV backlighting, according to the company.
While flip-chip LEDs have been in use for two years, E-LEDS is much smaller in size with brightness in 1cm2 the same as that for 3cm x 4cm of conventional flip-chip LEDs, Nichia indicated.
Nichia expects global LED demand in 2015 to hike on year by 30-40% in volume but average selling price to fall by 20-30%. In particular, automotive application of LED will grow fast in 2015, with market value to increase on year by about 30%, Nichia said.
