Duo UK has become the first manufacturer in the UK to offer 100% recyclable polythene mailing bags made from completely renewable sources.
The company has been selected by polymer distribution company Resin Trade to produce mailing bags using a thermoplastic resin, green PE, which is made entirely from sugarcane ethanol.
US-based petrochemical producers Braskem has developed green PE and has also signed an agreement with Resin Trade to be the distributor for its goods in UK and Ireland.
Duo UK has been actively involved in green investments and this move is a part of the company's green initiative. The products will be produced from 100% renewable material that is also 100% recyclable.
Green PE which is produced in southern Brazil is made from sugarcane ethanol. Sugarcane is a water efficient crop that helps in capturing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and is planted through strict ethical guidelines.
Further the sequestering of CO2 from the atmosphere by the ethanol ensures saving of 2.15kg of CO2, with each kilogram of green plastic produced. This helps clients to achieve a carbon neutral status.
Speaking about the appeal of such products among customers, Duo commercial director Anthony Brimelow said: "We're seeing a strong increase in demand for green products, driven partly from our clients' own corporate social responsibility policies and partly by clients reacting to their own customer demands.
"What is particularly impressive about Green PE is its environmental credentials extend all the way down the production chain. Meanwhile, from a manufacturing point of view, we can use the same processes and machinery we use to create standard polythene products. It's also a very versatile product, so while we see the online retail sector as a major buyer in the short term, there's nothing to stop us exploring other applications in the future."
