Multistate Salmonella Outbreak

A multistate Salmonella outbreak in the US has been linked to a hatchery located in Missouri, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).

The outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo has led to least 66 cases of illness and 16 hospitalizations across 20 states in the country.

Epidemiological and laboratory evidence have linked this outbreak to Estes Hatchery in Springfield,Missouri.People who got sick reported having contact with chicks, ducklings and other live baby poultry sold at Estes Hatchery.

Illnesses onset dates range from 28 February to 6 June. However, infections that occurred after 29 May might not have been reported, which can take two to three weeks from the time of infection.

The CDC has advised people not to kiss or snuggle live poultry and not to let children handle them. Those who handle live poultry have been urged to wash their hands immediately afterwards.
