US legislators have filed a legislation to improve packaging of products containing liquid nicotine.
According to a pediatricians' group, ingestion of liquid nicotine can cause vomiting and seizures and even death.
The liquid nicotine is usually found in e-cigarettes, easy-to-open vials and small eye-dropper bottles, which are easily available in retail and online stores.
US Senator for Florida and Senate Commerce Committee senior member Bill Nelson said there is enough nicotine in some of these bottles to kill small children.
According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, in 2012, around 1,351 cases of liquid nicotine exposures were reported and those numbers have gone up to 1,500 in this year so far.
Following the increase in reported cases, the Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2014 will direct the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue rules for companies to make safer and child-resistant packaging for any liquid nicotine sold to consumers.
HELP Committee member Michael Bennet said for any parent, the process of child-proofing ones home to make sure the kids do not get into anything that can harm them can be a big project.
"Thankfully, many household products are manufactured with child-resistant packaging to help make things a little easier. With the popularity of e-cigarettes on the rise, this commonsense bill will ensure that liquid nicotine is among the products sold with child-resistant packaging to keep our kids safe," Bennet added.
