Lighting Industry Support The UK Economy Via The Means of Its Manufacturing Sector

Rune Marki, president of the Lighting Industry Association (LIA) and managing director (MD) of Osram UK - a leader in the global lighting market - has outlined how much the lighting industry is doing to support the UK economy via the means of its manufacturing sector, saying that it should do more to vocalise its achievements.

Currently, Mr Marki said he feels the industry could be somewhat undersold as the message of its contribution and value may not be as widespread and effectively communicated as it could be, he reported in Lux Magazine.

As increasing numbers of businesses and homes invest in new lighting solutions in order to slash bills, reduce carbon footprints, bring down operational costs and improve the quality of lighting on their premises, clearly the message is starting to get through to more and more individuals.

However, many may wonder why investing in retrofit lighting projects - when the benefits are so comprehensively advantageous - is not more widespread. Furthermore, some may question whether or not it is up to the lighting industry itself to address this issue itself or whether other authorities - such as the government - should be helping out.

The LIA president went on to suggest that perhaps the lighting industry should spread the word more about its significant contribution to the manufacturing sector and, thereby, to the UK's coffers, as it struggles to fight off the prospect of a triple-dip recession - given that the national economy is at the forefront of many people's minds.

While he believes the message of the energy-saving potential of modern lighting is starting to get through - helped by the growing number of conferences and seminars which are putting the industry on more of a commercial pedestal - Mr Marki said the quality of the products on lighting markets at the moment is exemplary and that companies needed to be more "loud and proud" of their efforts.

"In the world of lighting, [Britain's reputation] has been built on the efforts of companies that have, for many years, delivered quality products and services throughout the world. Let's make sure everyone knows this," he added.
