Power-One and Panasonic Have Formed a Partnership to Develop Energy Storage Systems

Power-One and Panasonic have formed a partnership to develop and manufacture energy storage systems for the residential and non-residential markets based on Power-One inverters and Panasonic lithium-ion batteries.

The companies will develop batter-based storage systems for both residential and utility ends of the smart-grid in Europe and the US.

There are also plans to develop the large-scale commercial and utility photovoltaic inverter business in Japan.

Storage in the smart-grid

Storage systems are being used in the power grid to alleviate peak power consumption in large scale renewable energy systems and as backup power supplies.

"Energy storage resources will greatly increase the adoption, use and sustainability of renewable energy systems throughout the world in homes, businesses, and in large utility plants," said Dr. Alex Levran, President, Renewable Energy Solutions at Power-One.

Lithium-ion battery cells

Panasonic is developing home energy management systems and lithium-ion battery cells, which will be combined with Power One's inverters.

"We are well positioned to develop the energy storage systems business around the world, as well as expanding the non-residential segment of the energy management business in Japan," said Tamio Yoshioka, director of energy system business at Panasonic Eco Solutions.
