According to the 2009 survey of world production, consumption, exports and imports of ceramic tiles by the Italian magazine Ceramic World Review, the total output of Malaysian ceramic tile industry was 90 million square meters (top 15 in the world); the total consumption was 69 million square meters(top 21); the export volume was 23 million square meters(top 14). 50% of the tiles consumed by Malaysia were produced at home, 30% from China and 20% from other countries. A high quality standard_ISO13006 is strictly followed by the manufacturers. Most of the tiles are single-fired glazed tiles and porcelain tiles with all kinds of formats. Since Malaysia boasts rich kaolin and other raw materials for porcelain tile, the local plants produce quite a few porcelain rustic tiles. As far as the tile types are concerned, the polished tile has the major share in the Malaysia market. Nearly half of the ceramic manufacturers produce polished tiles and 40% of the tile consumption is earned by rustic tile. Speaking of the format, tiles with larger size like 600mm× 600mm are popular among the customers. Malaysians have no special requirements of the color. In addition, the Italian rustic tiles are favored in Malaysia. In 2010, the manufacturing industry enjoyed the rapidest development in Malaysia, with an increase of 13.5%, taking up 27.9% of the nation's GDP. As a part of the traditional manufacturing sector, the ceramic industry is one of the 10 areas that attract most foreign investment. The tile production in 2009 was 5.9% more than that in 2008. It is estimated that the growth rate this year will be higher than before. There are several leading brands in the Malaysian ceramics sector, like Guocera, MML, White Horse, Niro, Venus and Alpha. What is more, Malaysia is one of the major export targets of Chinese ceramic products and machineries. China exported 2.17 million square meters to Malaysia in 2009, up 79.3% over last year. With the increase of fuel price and overall cost, Malaysia decided to raise the price of ceramic products. However, the Chinese products find their market with the price 15%-30% lower than the local products. In the year 2010, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) was officially built, aiming to promote the trade and business among China and ASEAN member states. With the development of ASEAN, the tariff of trades between the two parts will be gradually reduced to none. Moreover, until now, the Malaysian government hasn't imposed an anti-dumping punishment on Chinese tile sector, which means a good guarantee for the development of Chinese ceramic sector in Malaysia.
