Approximately 70% of the food and beverage companies are witnessing bottom line benefit as result of energy-related actions, according to a report by Siemens Industry.

The report, The Future of Energy: The UK Manufacturing Opportunity, surveyed 600 board directors, senior management and energy managers from the UK manufacturers operating across all major sectors.

Data showed that 74% of the businesses had energy management objectives in place for the year ahead and 61% planned for the next five years.

Around 77% of the food & beverage manufacturers consider energy as a business critical issue.

The report revealed growing importance of energy management at board level in food & beverage manufacturers amid rising energy costs.

Siemens Industry energy efficiency and environmental care head Steve Barker said: "Our findings indicate that the sector has, compared to others, a lower executive currency, but nonetheless is seeing an increasing focus on energy and cost reduction."

The industry, however, feels that there is an uncertainty associated with a return on investment.

Also, the food and beverage sectors is still behind businesses such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive and metals, in terms of board level involvement, investment in renewable and self-generation initiatives.
