Apple iPad Users Generated 81.9% of Tablet Web Traffic, But Samsung Galaxy Tab Was 4.3%

Samsung is second to Apple in tablet sales and coming on strong, though Samsung Galaxy Tab users remain well behind iPad users in how much they use the Web, according to Chitika, an online advertising network.

Apple iPad users generated 81.9% of tablet Web traffic in North America in March, while Samsung Galaxy Tab users generated only 4.3% of tablet traffic on the American Web, according to a study Chitika released on Friday.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, Samsung had about 15% of tablet shipments, compared to 45% for Apple, according to IDC.

Samsung is the clear leader in sales of Android-based tablets.

Overall Android shipments totaled 43% of the tablet market in the first quarter of 2013, when about 40.6 million tablets shipped, according to the latest data released earlier this week by Strategy Analytics.

Strategy Analytics didn't divulge how many Android tablets Samsung shipped in the first quarter, but using the 15% rate reported by IDC in the previous quarter, Samsung likely shipped more than 6 million in the period.

Samsung doesn't disclose unit shipments, but did report a record $6.4 billion first quarter profit on Friday.

Samsung's first quarter smartphone shipments almost doubled those of Apple in the first quarter, IDC reported Thursday. Samsung shipped 70.7 million to Apple's 37.4 million during the period, IDC said.
