Trade Resources Industry Views The Tobacco Retailer's Alliance Has Also Taken a Stand at The Event

The Tobacco Retailer's Alliance Has Also Taken a Stand at The Event

The tobacco giant exhibiting at the Labour Party conference in Brighton despite the party having already committed to backing standardised packaging for cigarettes.

The Tobacco Retailer's Alliance has also taken a stand at the event, leading to criticism from some in the Party that it should not be taking money from the tobacco industry.

Diane Abbott, the shadow public health minister, told a fringe meeting at the conference that she and Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham were unhappy about the arrangement and that Burnham tried to ban big tobacco companies at Labour's conference but was overruled by the party headquarters.

"On selling exhibition space to big tobacco, the health team led by Andy Burnham did make representations to the party about this and we were not able to get that changed," the Daily Telegraph has reported her as saying. "But the health team is not happy."

A Labour spokesman, meanwhile, told the paper: "Labour has been clear that we back standardised cigarette packaging. The Labour Party exhibition includes stands from a wide range of charities, companies and organisations putting forward their points of view. This does not mean the Labour Party supports the view put forward by the exhibitor."

A spokesman for Philip Morris told the Telegraph that the company was trying to raise awareness of trade in illicit and fake cigarettes.

The coalition government postponed plans in June to ban branding on tobacco packaging and to enforce a standardised look for the packs, leading to a high-profile political row over the role of lobbyists, and in particular the Tories' election strategist Lynton Crosby, in Westminster politics.
