A new study has revealed that the corrugated sector has reduced its carbon footprint by a further 4.8% over the three years period during 2009 to 2011, which follows a cut down of almost 12% in the previous three-year cycle.
The European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers' (FEFCO) European Database for Corrugated Board Life Cycle Studies revealed that the average carbon footprint of corrugated packaging at present is 746kg/t over 784kg/t for 2006-08.
Achievement of savings has been possible through reductions in energy consumption and the industry's use of recycled materials to produce new corrugated packaging, which rose across Europe to 85% in 2012 from 82% in 2009.
Corrugated packaging, which protects around 75% of goods in shipment can be found in various sectors including retail multiples, manufacturers and distributors; from heavy industrial components to fragile items.
Majority of the material is made from recycled material. It comes from sustainably managed forests, using softwoods such as pine and spruce.
