Sheffield Forgemasters Has Signed a $3.3 Million Contract

Sheffield Forgemasters International, Sheffield, U. K., has signed a $3.3 million contract to supply castings for one of the world’s largest counter-blow hammer presses. The contract is the fourth order placed with Forgemasters by ATI Ladish, Cudahy, Wis., and brings the sales total between the two companies to about $6.5 million. The latest order is for the upper and lower rams for ATI Ladish Forgings’ number 85 press. At 165 and 155 metric tons, the castings will be delivered to ATI’s Cudahy-based forging plant, which services the aerospace industry with titanium parts. “I have been working with ATI Ladish for three years on the detail of this contract, and through our great partnership, consider them one of our best clients, ” said Michael Holloway, senior sales manager at Forgemasters. “The size of this latest batch of castings requires them to be finish-machined in a vertical boring machine which is capable of operating up to five and a half meters in height. ” Counter-blow presses operate two hammers, or rams, which work in opposition. The castings will form the main rams which drive the counter-blow hammer faces together and will measure 4.8 x 3.3 x 4 m for the upper ram and 3.5 x 3.3 x 3 m for the lower ram. According to a statement released by the company, Forgemasters will conduct two pours to create the castings. The project will require four ladles of molten steel for each, weighing in at 380 metric tons for the upper ram and 360 metric tons for the lower ram. The contract is due to be completed in October.
