Finnish supplier of pressure-sensitive label materials, UPM Raflatac’s self-adhesive label in Australia SynLite RP 77 received marine immersion approval.
UPM Raflatac Oceania technical and product development manager Matthew Van Eck said the certification will give confidence to its customers that its SynLite self-adhesive labelstock is durable and printable.
"It also provides peace of mind for label converters printing self-adhesive drum labels, which are required to comply with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) certification," Eck said.
Tested by Smithers Pira and manufactured at the Melbourne factory, the label conforms to Section 2 of the Standard BS 5609:1986 - Printed Pressure-Sensitive, Adhesive Coated Labels for Marine Use.
According to the company, marine labels are typically used for identification, warning and instruction applied to drums containing chemicals.
The BS 5609, an internationally recognised standard covering the suitability for the labeling of goods for marine shipment, sets out various durability criteria.
The criteria include adhesive performance, print permanence and abrasion resistance, stipulating minimum standards for labels to be used in marine environments.
