New Engine for FH Truck Range Is Launched by Volvo

Swedish truck maker Volvo Trucks has unveiled a new six-cylinder 13-litre (D13) 460hp engine for the company's FH range of heavy trucks, which complies with Euro 6 environmental standards.

The new engine offers maximum power output of 338kw at 1400 to 1900 r/min and 2300Nm torque at 1000 to 1400 r/min.

Volvo Trucks Engine Strategy and Planning manager Mats Franzén said the Volvo FH gets a new 460 hp Euro 6 engine optimised for fast, fuel-efficient transportation on good roads.

"The first trucks with the new engine will be delivered in spring 2013,"Franzén said.

The truck maker has incorporated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to comply with the new emission standards, which will reduce emissions of the new engine by 77% and particulate emissions by half.

Volvo has incorporated the engine with an SCR system, which converts the nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gases into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

According to Volvo, EGR will increase the exhaust gas temperature when the engine is not hot to heat the exhaust gases, which has to reach as a minimum of 250° C to make the SCR system to operate.

The new engine will be powering the Volvo FH, 4x2/6x2, tractor and rigid, comprising vehicles for transport of dangerous goods (ADR) and will be offered for trucks with right-hand drive as well as left-hand drive versions.
