Goya Foods Replaces Existing Marinade Product Line From Glass to Lightweight PET Bottles

Goya Foods has replaced its existing marinade product line available in 12oz and 24.5oz products from glass to lightweight polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles supplied by Amcor Rigid Plastics.

Amcor's hot fill containers, which feature a shrink wrap label, deliver performance and cost advantages including portability and reduced breakage.

The bottles also deliver sustainability benefits such as recyclability, reduced transportation costs, as well as a reduced carbon footprint.

With the new PET bottle design, the US-based food company also offers consumers more marinade product by moving to the 725ml bottle from a 705ml glass container.

According to Amcor, the use of PET in the 24.5oz container results in a cut down in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 61.4%compared to glass, representing savings equivalent to GHG emissions from 313 passenger vehicles, annually.

The bottles also permit 52% more product to be shipped per truckload. They have a 38mm finish and are integrated into existing glass filling lines with minimal adjustment.

Goya Foods senior vice president Joseph Perez said, "In the end, lightweight PET not only delivered a major savings in terms of freight cost but also gave us the glass-like appearance and the shelf appeal to maintain our brand image."

Designed for both ambient fill and hot fill applications, both PET bottles feature Amcor's new Origami hot fill technology which incorporates six flat panels to counteract vacuum that occurs in hot filled containers.

The panels have been designed to collapse, compensating for shrinkage during cooling to maintain strength and integrity. The flat surfaces create a profile which enhances gripping and consumer handling and a predominant neck is said to improve pourability.

Further, Goya Foods plans to replace glass with PET in an existing 12oz juice beverage line, Amcor said.
