US-based Sun Chemical has joined forces with ScentSational Technologies, the provider of scented packaging applications, to launch SunScent coatings.
The coating allows any printer to incorporate scent directly onto the packaging substrate.
It is designed to release scent at the shelf during opening and use.
It stays inactive until consumers handle the package, which triggers a release and lets people experience a product's aroma, according to whattheythink.com.
Sun Chemical Business Development VP Bob Lorenz said the product's scent/aroma can create anticipation and desire in the minds of consumers that it might taste good /perform well, which makes customers more likely to purchase the product.
"SunScent coatings print the scented coating directly onto the package itself so the scent can be released by simply handling the product, rather than scratching," Lorenz said.
SunScent coatings, which are available for flexo, gravure and offset coating units, can be applied directly onto packaging as a spot coating and done in-line, with any current pressroom configuration.
