Scott Bader Is Exhibiting Advanced Composites at The 20th Cce in 2014

Scott Bader Asia Pacific is exhibiting advanced composites at the 20th China International Composites Industrial Technical Expo (CCE 2014), taking place from 3-5 September at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Centre. This year, the Scott Bader stand at CCE (booth no: 1212) focuses on proven applications using the latest high performance resins, gelcoats, FR topcoats and structural adhesive products which have been recently added to the Advanced Composites range including:

Plug & Mold Tooling Products

The new vinyl ester (VE) spray tooling gelcoat, Crystic® Gelcoat 15PA, the most recent addition to the Crystic® 'matched tooling' system launched at JEC Europe 2014, is showcased for the first time at CCE 2014. This new high performance VE tooling gelcoat offers superior gloss retention and surface finish and is fully compatible with the standard and rapid tooling back up resin options offered. As well as tooling gelcoats and resin options, the 'Scott Bader-ATC' range of POLY-FAIR® modified polyester tooling compounds for pattern and mold making will also be promoted on the stand. POLY-FAIR T28 is the extrudable tooling compound, designed for milling of small and large plugs or direct limited production molds using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) multiple axis machines. POLY-FAIR T27 is the sprayable version, which is also fully CNC machinable, designed for milling patterns and large plugs with dimensions of 10-25 meters (30-75ft) or direct limited production molds. Both Poly-Fair grades offer the benefits of low shrink, high toughness and dust free cutting to produce a highly accurate profile of the finished part. Crystic Primecoat and Topcoat can be applied to POLY-FAIR products to achieve a high gloss surface finish, enabling the production of a high quality mold using the Crystic tooling system. Scott Bader now offers tool makers a full suite of materials from plug through to mold production.

Fire Retardant (FR) & High Performance Materials

Stand visitors will get to see the range of specialty fire retardant (FR) unsaturated polyester Crystic gelcoats and resins for FRP laminates used in applications requiring very low surface spread of flame with low smoke and toxic fumes (FST). This will included Crystic Fireguard 75PA Excel, a Class 1 intumescent 'non-flammable' protective FR topcoat which can withstand a direct flame at a temperature of 700°C for over 60 minutes. For the most demanding mass transportation applications, there is the range of Crestapol® high performance urethane acrylate based acrylic resins also available for applications requiring exceptional FST performance, such as ATH filled Crestapol 1212 which can be used in pultrusion and closed mold applications. All Crestapol grades available can be heavily ATH filled, offering designers a combination of superior mechanical strength, toughness, outstanding FST and high temperature performance. Crestapol resins are suitable for many building, passenger rail and other land transportation applications from which high performance parts can be molded at room temperature by vacuum infusion or resin transfer molding (RTM), with a good surface finish and minimal print through.

For automotive body panels and similar applications, the Crestapol 1250LV resin grade, which is fully compatible with carbon fibers, has been specially developed by Scott Bader. It is suitable for cost effectively vacuum infusing extremely tough, very lightweight parts using woven fabrics made from glass, carbon and aramid fibers. According to Scott Bader, Crestapol 1250LV now offers a real alternative to epoxies for demanding high performance carbon fiber composite body panel applications. Crestapol 1250LV is now specified by several leading specialist fabricators of custom made carbon fiber motorsport body parts.

Structural Adhesives for Composites & Metals

Also launched in 2014, on the CCE stand is the 'rapid bond' Crestbond® M1-04 grade, developed by Scott Bader to significantly increase production efficiencies for high volume parts assembly. With no requirement for a substrate primer and a working time of only 3-4 minutes, assembled parts bonded with Crest bond M1-04 can be moved on to the next stage of production in as little as 8 minutes. According to Scott Bader test data, Crest bond M1-04 will effectively bond composites, plastics, ABS, aluminum, stainless steel and many other substrates commonly used in industrial applications. This new 'rapid bond' Crest bond grade is expected to be of particular interest to automotive OEMs and tier one and tier two suppliers due to its high elongation and toughness, its productivity benefits and its reliable long-term adhesion performance. Information on the complete ranges of Crystic Crestomer® urethane acrylate and Crest bond methacrylate 10:1 and 1:1 ratio structural adhesives offered by Scott Bader, as well as application case studies, will also be available.

All Crest bond adhesives require minimal surface preparation, have excellent fatigue and impact resistance, and can be applied using manual or pneumatic guns with automated dispensing machines. The combination of a fast cure with an ability to bond such a wide variety of different substrates has provided many manufacturers with significant shop floor advantages, cost savings and productivity benefits. These advantages have been proven in practice by a number of truck, bus and vehicle manufacturers around the world who have now switched to using Crest bond.

Technical and commercial representatives from Scott Bader are available throughout the show for meetings to discuss any application needs and to answer questions.
