Smurfit Kappa Selects Toscotec to Rebuild Dryer Section of Paper Machine in Colombia

Italy's Toscotec has agreed to rebuild the dryer section of Smurfit Kappa Papelsa's paper machine (PM) 1 located at Barbosa mill in Colombia.

The dryer section rebuild is expected to improve efficiency as well as increase operating speeds of the paper machine. It also aims to improve reel gross production over 40%.

Work includes the application of TT SteelDryer technology throughout the entire paper machine, with 5 sections and a total number of 42 dryers.

The new 11bar coded TT SteelDryers has been designed to provide higher heat transfer rates due to the thinner shell thickness of the steel dryer.

Additionally, TT SteelDryers provides wider drying face length with the same space requirements, thus allowing for drying a wider sheet width.

Toscotec will also supply an advanced rope-less tail threading system and sheet stabilization, designed to reach an operating speed of 1000mpm.

The firm is scheduled to complete the work by the end of 2016 and is planned to erect and commission the rebuild dryer section in the beginning of 2017.

With around 45,000 employees, Smurfit Kappa Papelsa provides paper-based packaging solutions. It has operations in 21 European countries and 13 in the Americas.

Toscotec offers complete production lines, plant retrofits, and individual machineries, as well as serving paper producers with customized solutions.
