GM Will Invest $600m to Expand and Upgrade The Fairfax Assembly Plant in The US

General Motors (GM) is planning to invest $600m to expand and upgrade the Fairfax assembly plant in the Kansas City of the US.

The expansion, which is expected to be completed in two years, will increase the plant's footprint by over 15% to 3.7 million square feet.

The expanded plant will include a 450,000sqft paint shop and will also reduce its energy usage by 50% as well as installation of the new press at its stamping facility.

GM chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said "This major investment is a vote of confidence in the employees and leadership of this plant and will allow them to continue producing beautiful, world-class vehicles like the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse with the same quality workmanship that has defined the Fairfax complex for nearly 70 years."

The new paint shop will get upgrades in technology including new tooling, robots and state-of-the-art environmental and efficiency enhancements.

The company, which has invested about $2.5bn in the Fairfax plant over the last ten years and about $7.3bn in the US since 2009, expects to improve the quality of the vehicles with the present investment.
