Notebook Shipments to Grow 9.7% in 2Q16

With brand vendors ready to launch new products for the second quarter, Chromebook to see strong shipment growth and Xiaomi to begin shipping its new notebook later in May, worldwide notebook shipments are expected to grow 9.7% sequentially in the second quarter, but will still see close to 10% drop on year.

Toshiba will continue phasing out from the consumer notebook market in the second quarter, helping the top-5 brand vendors' combined shipments to account for over 80% of the worldwide volume. Lenovo will see increasing shipments for its high-end notebook models and Chromebooks and most of these orders are placed with Taiwan makers, Digitimes Research's report noted.

Dell will achieve over 10% on-year shipment growth in the second quarter thanks to strong demand from the enterprise sector and for Chromebooks. Apple released its second-generation 12-inch MacBook for the second quarter, but the product's orders are much weaker than its predecessor from the same quarter of the previous year.

Acer released new inexpensive ultrabook and gaming products for the second quarter and will have the largest shipment growth among the top-10 in the second quarter.

Quanta's shipment gap with Compal Electronics will be extended in the second quarter because of Chromebook's strong performance plus Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Asustek Computer's increasing orders to the ODM.

Inventec will surpass Pegatron Technology and become the fourth-largest ODM in the second quarter with increasing orders from HP and new orders from Xiaomi.
