US generics drug maker Actavis has rolled out new formulations of Fioricet (butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine capsules, USP) and Fioricet with Codeine (butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine and codeine phosphate, USP).
Both medicines contain a lower dose of acetaminophen, designed to provide patients suffering from tension headaches or muscle contraction with a safer treatment option.
New formulations of Fioricet and Fioricet diminish the amount of acetaminophen in the products from 325mg to 300mg and meet the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) instruction. The FDA has mandated manufacturers to limit the dose of acetaminophen in all prescription drug products.
Most commonly used medicine in the US, overdosing of Acetaminophen can be fatal and may lead to acute liver failure (ALF).
