Poyry to Upgrade Smurfit Kappa's Paper Machine in Netherlands

Poyry has secured a detail engineering services contract to upgrade Smurfit Kappa's paper machine 1 in the Netherlands.

The scope of the contract includes mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical, instrumentation and automation engineering.

The paper machine 1 in Roermond has been operating for four decades as per Smurfit Kappa. Following its last modification, the paper machine has been producing Testliner & Fluting up to 1,000 metres per minute.

Pöyry will be taking up the task of rebuilding of the approach flow system and the wire section of the paper machine. These works are expected to boost the operating speed and also the production quality.

Pöyry Central Europe Industry Business Group head Christian Beyer said: “With Pöyry's competencies in the pulp and paper industry as well as the outstanding knowledge in rebuilding and modernisation of paper mills, we are the right partner for this modernisation, now and in the future.”

Financial aspects of the contract have not been revealed by the two companies.

Smurfit Kappa Roermond Papier project manager Sjon Vrieze said: "Thanks to the revamp of our paper machine 1, we will be able to produce more efficiently and reach the highest possible standards in quality.

“This investment enables us to continue to be ahead of the market and satisfy our customers' needs.”

Last week, Smurfit Kappa introduced the new Vitop handle for cardboard boxes made from 100% recyclable polyethylene. The Dublin, Ireland-based Smurfit Kappa provides a range of bag-in-box packaging solutions.
