Farmers Looking to Replace Their Pickup Are Now in The Lucky Position

Farmers looking to replace their pickup in the next few months are now in the lucky position of being able to choose between two all-new model ranges. Ford replaced its long-running Ranger pickup earlier this year with a bigger and plusher version that also has bigger engines and a more car-like driving feel. Now Isuzu has announced its eight-year-old Rodeo pickups (pictured) will be replaced by the all-new D-Max. Details are still a little sketchy at this stage, but Isuzu said a single 2.5-litre, 163hp diesel engine will replace the current choice of 136 and 163hp powerplants. However, torque is up from 360Nm to 400Nm and fuel consumption is said to be 10% better than on the current models. The new D-Max is also said to be wider and longer than the existing model, and payload is likely to be up too. Towing capacity stays unchanged at 3, 000kg. Inside, the truck is claimed to have levels of comfort and technology that match the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok. However, the maker is keen to emphasise that the truck will remain a fully working vehicle rather than a lifestyle machine. That’s an important factor for the company, whose machines have always been popular with farmers. In fact, some 37% of buyers of the current pickup are said to be involved with agriculture. Isuzu UK has also boosted its position in the farming sector by encouraging tractor dealers to sell its products. Three John Deere and two Massey Ferguson dealers now sell Isuzu pickups and sales through these channels are said to be healthy. The D-Max will be officially launched in June. Prices have not been announced yet. Isuzu’s UK importer, International Motors, has also recently started bringing in Chinese-made Great Wall Steed pickup trucks. But they will be marketed separately and the spec levels of the two marques are said to be quite different. The Steed is a low-frills machine with a 2t towing capacity, compared to the D-Max’s 3t tow capacity and relatively high levels of sophistication. Source: fwi.co.uk
