Microsoft Opens up Preview Versions of Office Productivity Apps for Android Tablets

Microsoft has announced it has opened up preview versions of its popular Office productivity apps for Android tablets.

Following a limited beta, which began last November, Microsoft is making pre-release versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint available to download from the Google Play store.

The idea is that Microsoft can collect more feedback from users before the full, long-awaited roll out later this year.

However, Android tablet owners will have to meet some requirements in order to get in on the action.

In the post on the Office blog, Microsoft said you’ll need a Microsoft account (Hotmail, Outlook, etc.), a tablet with a 7-10.1-inch display, running Android 4.4 and up, while rocking ARM-based processors on the inside.

If all of those boxes are ticked, users will be able to download the apps and begin creating, editing and sharing documents on their Google-powered slates. Files can be stored locally or via the company’s OneDrive cloud storage platform.

Microsoft is continuing to make big strides towards making office as accessible and convenient as possible on a range of devices.

Late last year, the company dropped the need for an Office 365 subscription in order to make use of the apps on iOS.
It also announced a partnership to integrate Dropbox directly within the apps, despite its status as a OneDrive rival.
